What is Content Management ?
Content Management Systems, also known as CMS are websites that enable business people to take control of updating their website, without having to pay a web developer to make the changes, or wait for them to fit it into their schedule.
Who uses CMS ?
Content Management Systems or web builders are used by organisations like the BBC to allow staff who are not programmers to add, edit and delete their web content. Good CMS are built to enable even people who are entry level PC literate the ability to manage a website.
Until very recently, CMS were the preserve of large comapnies and organisations due their big price tag. It is not unheard of to find companies paying in excess of £20,000 for systems which gave them the same ability as our much less expensive systems!
Content Management System Disadvantages
There are disadvantages to CMS, although you won't read much about them on the web. We like to be honest and leave the decision up to you.
You still have to have someone add the content
The main disadvatage is that someone still has to type the content in. We have gone some way to helping by allowing you to copy and paste from Microsoft Word straight into the site. With a non-CMS system you would normally fax the web designer your new content and let them do it.
With greater flexibility comes complexity
You will find content management systems that try to do absolutely everything for everybody and end up being so complex that you might as well learn to be a programmer. When you think that the majority of people only use up to 20% of a program like Microsoft Words capability, we have gone down the route of making our CMS simple to use. Our rule of thumb is that anyone who can complete the forms to obtain a quote, has the skills to manage one of our websites.
Search Engines hate many Content Management Systems
Its true. We understand how search engines work and how content management systems work. We train other web developers how to optimise their sites to make the most of search engines and we built our CMS to take full advantage of this. SEO or Search Engine Optimisation is an ever changing science, but our clients have had some amazing results. Can you afford to take the risk of having a site that no-one can find.
